Hair tangles easily when it is dry, damaged, long, or rough at the cuticle, and when it rubs against clothing or sheets.
Common causes
- Dry or damaged hair with raised cuticles.
- Long length.
- Friction from clothes or pillows.
- Wind.
- Lack of conditioner.
- Curly or fine hair types.
Prevention
- Use conditioner every wash.
- Detangle from the ends up with a wide tooth comb.
- Sleep on a silk pillowcase.
- Trim split ends.
Tip
Detangle when wet with conditioner.
Why hair knots

Hair tangles when the cuticle scales roughen and catch on neighboring strands. Dry, damaged, curly or long hair tangles more easily. Heat styling, bleaching, friction against pillows and collars, wind and rubbing break cuticles. Wet hair is at its weakest, and can stretch up to about 30 percent before breaking.
- Curly hair has fewer cuticle layers at the bends and a lower sebum spread, which increases dryness and tangling.
- Hard water leaves mineral deposits that make hair feel rough.
- Fine, long hair often tangles at the nape, where it rubs against clothing.
Prevention
Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb on damp hair with conditioner. Use a silk or satin pillowcase and braid or loosely tie hair for sleep. Trim split ends every 8 to 12 weeks. Apply a leave-in conditioner after washing. Avoid brushing wet hair with a fine brush, and avoid towel rubbing. Heat tools should be used below 180 C (about 356 F) with a protectant.

Why hair tangles
Hair tangles when cuticles lift and snag, which is more likely in dry, damaged, long or curly hair. Friction from pillows, wind and towels increases knots. Curly hair tangles more because curls interlock.
Prevention
Detangle from ends upward with a wide tooth comb on damp, conditioned hair. Use leave in conditioner, silk pillowcases and loose braids at night. Regular trims remove split ends.
Hair structure and tangles
Each hair is covered with overlapping cuticle scales like roof shingles. Damage from heat, bleaching and friction lifts scales, which then catch on neighboring strands. Humidity makes hair swell and frizz. Long hair has more length to tangle.

Prevention
Brush before washing, comb conditioner through from ends upward, avoid rubbing with towels and tie hair loosely in a silk scrunchie at night. Protein and moisture balanced products help. Trimming every 8 to 12 weeks cuts off split ends, which can travel up the shaft. Sudden heavy matting can mean hair damage or scalp conditions.
